Today’s lecture was about information overload. It is interesting to see that information brings us convenience but also frustration and headaches.
I have strong feeling about the questions Rodney raised at the beginning of the lesson. I really do waste time looking for folders, especially those contain photos, I need on my desktop. I opened lots of folders to organize the photos and files I have, so there one big folder with many small folders inside. Sometimes I duplicate files into different folders because I afraid I will lose the files. They are actually not useful to me, I just afraid I might need them someday. However, if I really need them someday, I will search for additional information and open up multiple tabs in my Firefox. It seems that I can finish the work easier and faster with additional \information, but in fact I need extra time to filter out information and pick the most reliable sources.
Google is my favorite search engine as it always provides me with a very large number of search results. As long as I spend time to do the searching, I can always get what I want, like video, images, map, news and translator. However,to be such a powerful and dominated search engines, Google is collecting data by storing our personal information when we use its services like Gmail, Google calendar, Google Latitude, Google voice, etc. without our permission.
If you go to youtube, you can see there are many videos people made to show oogle’s dark side and mock Google for privacy invasion.Here are the two cartoon and animation I found in youtube which are ironic.

They show how Google control us and our concerns about our life in the future, like in the first video said ' How I can trust you with so much power.' . It is funny to see we enjoy and love getting informative we want, but at the same time we hate the way Google used to collect information.
Hi Ursula,as we are living in a digital world, it is no doubt that we have a close relationship with information (computer, MTR, street, mobile). We need to filter and select those information before we use or believe, otherwise we may control by information.
回覆刪除Hey, Ursula, to avoid losing files, apart from duplicate them, I like to send a copy to my email too!! :P Google is a very useful search engine not only because it provides a large number of results but it also offers some more relevant as well as precise information. Comparing with Yahoo, it's a lot better!! Do you think so? If we look for some literature sources for projects, our professors sometimes advise us to use "Google Scholar" google some useful information online!! It is so hard to escape from it since it really provides us a lot of things that are closely related to our lives.
回覆刪除It cannot be doubted that Google is a very good search engine. Before this lecture, I never thought about the collection of personal data by Google. We can get the information from Google without paying money. On the other hand, Google collects information/data from us without asking our permission. Well, this story tells us that there is no free lunch in the world. :P

回覆刪除Actually I am sort of.. being controlled by information already. Hahaahah Like when i search for information, I want to read all the search results. But there are really too many that i don't know which are the most useful ones for me and so i feel very frustrated. Hahaha

I backup the files by sending copies to my email too,but here comes another problem. Like when i want to send a copies of a group of photos or files which are not under the same catergories, it's difficult for me to think of the subject name, so i will simply type something randomly as the subject names. As there are more and more emails accumulated, it is a big problem for me to seek the files. Hahhaa

Hahha What you said is true. But it would be horrible if Google can control the world one day like what is talking about in the first video. They can even spy us in the bathroom. Hhahaha So funny.
Heyhey, it just interesting to know you always spend time in looking into files... and one random question... are you using microsoft? if that I would suggest you to use Mac [because you can just type the file and know where it is]

Hi Ursula, I like your first video!! The man there is so funny! We can't actually leave Google, that's why we have to be controlled by them. But we can't deny that Google really makes our lives easier.
